In The Odyssey, Book 4, Menelaus recalls collapsing beneath the weight of what he has learned, weeping until life itself seemed unbearable. Proteus urges him to rise, reminding him that sorrow alone brings no aid, and offers a final measure of hope regarding Agamemnon’s vengeance.

At last comes the answer Menelaus dreads and desires most: Odysseus yet lives, stranded and weeping on a distant island, held fast by Calypso with no ship or crew to carry him home. And for Menelaus himself, the god foretells a gentler fate—transport not to death in Argos, but to the Elysian plain, where ease and unending breeze await.
