The dead answer the call. From darkness, voices rise — and one is painfully familiar.
In The Odyssey, Book 11 continues as Odysseus performs the rites Circe commanded, digging a trench and pouring offerings to summon the spirits of the dead. As blood fills the pit, shades gather in a great, fearful multitude: the young, the old, the slain, and the grieving. Sword drawn, Odysseus holds them at bay, waiting for Teiresias. Before the prophet appears, another soul comes first — Elpenor, left unburied behind.
This passage marks the moment when ritual becomes reckoning, and the journey to the dead confronts Odysseus with the cost already paid.
