In The Odyssey, Book 5, Odysseus answers Calypso at last, acknowledging her beauty and immortality, yet choosing the fragile, aging life that waits for him at home. Even the certainty of further suffering cannot turn him aside; endurance, he declares, has already shaped his life.

With Dawn’s return, words give way to action. Calypso arms him with tools and leads him to the trees, and Odysseus sets to work with practiced skill—felling timber, shaping beams, boring joints, and fitting mast, sail, and rudder. By his own hands, the raft that will carry him back toward fate is born.
