The Slaughter of the Sun God’s Cattle (Homer’s The Odyssey, Book 12 – Part 12)

The moment Odysseus feared most arrives while he sleeps, heavy with consequence. Hunger and desperation tip his crew toward an act that cannot be undone.

In this passage of The Odyssey, Eurylochus convinces the men to slaughter the sacred cattle of Helios, offering improvised prayers and flawed sacrifices in place of proper rites. Odysseus awakens too late, recognizing the deed by its smell and crying out to the gods as Helios himself demands vengeance before the Immortals.

This is the irrevocable turning point of Book 12, where choice, disobedience, and divine law collide—setting the final reckoning into motion.
