Sweden's Forgotten Forest Wars

While we often picture Vikings with axes or industrial giants with blueprints, Sweden’s history is deeply rooted in the management of its vast wilderness. This episode explores the skogssmygar—forest smugglers—and the fierce battles fought not over gold or land borders, but over the right to burn charcoal and gather timber. We trace how the state’s need for iron production during the Stormaktstiden led to strict forest laws, creating a class of resilient outlaws who defied royal decree. From the copper mines of Falun to the dense forests of Dalarna, we examine how resource extraction shaped Swedish society, law enforcement, and local identity long before modern environmentalism. Join us as we uncover the quiet war between the crown’s economic ambitions and the people who lived by the trees.
