Sweden's Forgotten Forest Wars and Timber Empire

While previous episodes have touched upon Sweden's military might during the Stormaktstiden, this episode delves into the hidden economic engine that sustained it: the timber industry. We explore the 'skogssmygning' (forest smuggling) wars, where peasants in Norrland and Dalarna fought to protect their ancestral rights against the Crown’s strict logging monopolies. Lucas and Luna discuss how Johan Palmstruch’s banking innovations were funded by these wood revenues, and how the Great Reduction under Charles XI reshaped land ownership. The conversation uncovers the human cost of empire-building through the lens of rural resistance, the legal battles over skogsbruk (forestry), and the quiet defiance of those who lived in the shadow of Stockholm’s power. From the dense pine forests of the north to the sawmills of the south, we trace how a nation built its global influence not just on gunpowder, but on the relentless harvest of its natural resources.
