Sweden's Viking Silk Road and the Coin Crisis

Before Sweden became a European power, it was a key node on the Eastern trade routes connecting Scandinavia to the Islamic Caliphates. This episode explores the 'Viking Age' in the East, focusing on the massive influx of silver dirhams that flooded Swedish markets from the late 8th to the 11th century. We examine how this foreign currency shaped local economies, led to the widespread practice of cutting coins for weight-based transactions, and created a unique archaeological record found across Uppland and Södermanland. Lucas and Luna discuss the lives of the traders who traveled the Volga river systems, the cultural exchange evident in runestones mentioning distant lands like 'Greece' (Byzantium) and 'Al-Maghrib', and the eventual collapse of this trade network as Islamic silver supplies dried up. The conversation also touches on the transition from bullion to minted coinage under later kings, setting the stage for Sweden's integration into medieval European monetary systems.
