The Great Northern War: Sweden's Rise and Fall
Om avsnittet
We left off with the coin crisis of the Viking age, but by the late seventeenth century, Sweden had transformed from a trading hub into a continental military powerhouse. This episode explores the Stormaktstiden, or the Era of Great Power, driven by two figures who reshaped Europe: Queen Christina and her successor, Charles XI. We examine how the Great Reduction stripped the nobility of their lands to fund a standing army, creating the indelningsverket allotment system that allowed a small population to project massive power. But this militarization came at a cost. When Charles XII took the throne in 1700, he inherited an empire stretched too thin. The ensuing Great Northern War against a coalition of Russia, Denmark-Norway, and Saxony-Poland shattered Swedish hegemony. We trace the disastrous invasion of Russia, the burning of Poltava, and the death of the 'Lion of the North,' which marked the end of Sweden as a dominant imperial force and the beginning of its long transition toward neutrality and modern statehood.
