The Swedish Cold War: Spies, Neutrality and the Silent Front

Sweden’s neutrality during the Cold War was far from passive. In this episode, we explore how Stockholm became a critical node in the global intelligence landscape, hosting spies from both the West and the East while maintaining a public stance of non-alignment. We look at the case of Stig Wennerström, the Soviet air force officer whose espionage network compromised Swedish defense secrets for over a decade, and the complex web of double agents like Birger Dahlerus who navigated the precarious balance between independence and survival. The narrative delves into the operational tactics used by the KGB and CIA on Swedish soil, including the use of dead drops and ciphered communications along the Baltic coast. We also examine the political fallout, including the resignation of Prime Minister Tage Erlander and the subsequent reforms to Sweden's security apparatus that reshaped its approach to national sovereignty. This is a story of quiet courage, institutional failure, and the heavy price of staying neutral in a divided world.
