Gary Edgington, a law enforcement and counter-terrorism veteran, hails from a family of dedicated officers. His law enforcement journey, both inspiring and harrowing, began at the LA Sheriff’s Academy, where he suffered a personal tragedy when his father was killed in the line of duty during his third week of training.

Undeterred by his father's death, Gary served in several Southern California departments before serving as a Special Agent with the California Department of Justice. Gary also served with the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and lead a multi-agency counter-terrorism task force.

Tony Musselman was a United States Marine Corps JTAC that was sent to Marjah with 2nd Battalion 6th Marines as a combat replacement after fellow JTAC Jason Calo was killed in combat. Tony had barely graduated from TACP school when he got his orders and it set the theme for the rest of his career. Tony deployed multiple times with 5th ANGLICO, 2/6, and MARSOC before leaving the service.

26 years of Delta Operator Chris Moyer's 31-year-career was spent with the Special Operation Command. In addition to serving with Ranger Battalion, Chris served with the Joint Special Operation Command and 19th Special Forces Group. His first mission with Delta was less than a month after Sept. 11th and he and his teammates would be some of the first soldiers fighting the War on Terror.

Fred Galvin is a United States Marine Corps Raider that came from the infantry and Recon communities. Galvin was the company commander for Fox Company, 2nd MSOB. Fox was the first MARSOC company to deploy and was falsely accused of murdering Afghan civilians after fighting through an ambush during their 2007 deployment to Afghanistan.

Elaina Rojas was a communications specialist for her Marine Special Operations Team but she began her career as a radio operator stationed in Okinawa, Japan. She had dreams of moving into an infantry-centric job but the Marine Corps Female Engagement Teams (FET) were being disbanded at this time. While seeking out a FET, another Marine let her know that the Marine Special Operations Command was looking for females for specialized missions. Cody Anderson was a United States Marine Corps assaultman that began his career with the Marine Corps Security Forces as part of their Recapture Tactics Team. Following 9/11, Cody was assigned to 3rd Battalion 7th Marine Regiment and participated in the invasion of Iraq. Following his deployment, Cody requested a transfer to Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and attended the MOS school in 2003.

Aren Brandfass spent more than 20 years in the United States Marine Corps and served as a machine gunner, sniper, Recon Marine, Marine Raider and more. In this episode, we discuss Aren's pre-9/11 career and his decision to get out of the Marines. He then describes signing back up after 9/11 and taking part in the invasion of Iraq as a sniper with 2nd Battalion 1st Marines.

Following his deployment to Iraq, Aren was assigned as an instructor at the Marine Corps legendary Sniper School. Aren was ready to take his career to the next level by attending Basic Reconnaissance Course and joining the legendary 1st Recon Battalion.

Travis shares experiences as a door gunner during humanitarian relief following Japan's devastating earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear disaster, detailing protective measures against radiation exposure. Tom Gathright is a United States Marine Infantryman turned reserve naval officer. In addition, Tom has worked as a Firefighter/EMT and private military contractor. Tom served in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom with 3rd Battalion 6th Marines, served as part of the guard force during a rotation to Cuba, and was also part of the recent evac of the American embassy in Kabul as the Taliban took over.

For the evacuation, Tom was working in the United States embassy in Kabul as a private military contractor and witnessed first-hand the chaotic withdrawal during the rapid deterioration of the country. He details the moment they were ordered to begin destroying classified material and the initial deployment of Marine reinforcements.

Josiah Trandahl is a United States Marine Corps Reserves officer with a background in artillery. After serving with Mike Battery in Chattanooga, TN, Trandahl transferred to 4th ANGLICO out of West Palm Beach, FL.

We start the show off by talking about Josiah's brewery in Gallatin, TN and some of the hurdles he had to jump to get it opened to the public. Big Trouble Brewing is now open and I wish him well with his new business.

In addition, we discussed Trandahl's tour in Afghanistan that saw his ANGLICO team attached to the Georgian Liaison Team that worked with our allied soldiers from the former USSR state. Trandahl and his team worked out of Bagram airfield and days before they were to rotate home they were attacked with a suicide vehicle-borne IED (SVBIED) that resulted in three Marines killed in action.

Morgan Lerette joined the Air National Guard prior to 9/11 and was called to active duty to support the newly minted Global War on Terrorism. After his first deployment to Oman, Lerette provided security for expeditionary airfields during the invasion of Iraq.

Following that deployment, Lerette was approached about joining the private security firm Blackwater by a former Force Recon Marine that he met in the Air National Guard. Lerette eventually came around to the idea and worked under various contracts for 18 months. He and his teammates became familiar with running the infamous Route Irish and trying to go fast enough to throw off any IED triggermen.

During this interview, we also talk about contracting in general and some of the positives and negatives with that career path. He gives us a peek into his new book Welcome to Blackwater that gives a boots-on-the-ground perspective of the organization, mission, and lasting effects.

Jason Angell joins us again on the Former Action Guys Podcast. This week we get into his time with 1st ANGLICO during their 2006 deployment to Ramadi. Jason and his Firepower Control Team (FCT) supported US Army forces during combat operations in one of the deadliest cities in Iraq at the time. Kevin Shipton is a former active duty artillery officer that still serves in the United States Marine Corps Reserves (USMCR). This is in addition to his full-time job as a police officer in California. Shipton is a combat veteran and has served with 10th Marines, 6th Marines, 1st ANGLICO, and 3D ANGLICO.

In this episode, we discuss life in the USMCR compared to active duty and how Shipton felt about that transition. We also talk about his career path after the Marines that led to him being a law enforcement officer in California. Sgt Erik Goodge was a United States Marine Corps Fire Support Man that hails from Evansville, IN. He is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and, with other members of 2nd Battalion 8th Marine Regiment, deployed in support of President Obama's surge in Afghanistan.

During Goodge's discussion about his deployment, the listener hears what difficulties faced the Marines that were new to the area and what life was like for the infantryman and their enablers. Goodge also details how he was wounded by an IED that was initiated by an Afghan National Army soldier that resulted in 2 ANA deaths, 1 Marine death and multiple injuries within the patrol.

Before Jason Angell took on the role of Marine Artillery Officer in 2000, he was a Marine Rifleman in the mid-90s. After joining 11th Marines, Jason was billeted as a forward observer and deployed with 1st Battalion 5th Marines with his fire support team during the invasion of Iraq.

This was an interesting interview with an in-depth description of multiple combat events during the invasion. I look forward to our next interview where we will discuss his next two Iraq deployments as a JTAC with 1st ANGLICO.

This week's guest on the Former Action Guys Podcast is Marine Combat Engineer Justin Eggen. Eggen is a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom with two deployments to Afghanistan to his name. On his first, he supported combat operations in Marjah as a combat replacement in 2010. After cutting his teeth and picking up some experience in Marjah, Eggen returned to Afghanistan in 2011 to support operations in the Sangin Valley.

Not only is Eggen a combat vet, he's also an award-winning poet with six publications to his name. His next work will be a fiction novel with an expected July release. Until then, Eggen is finishing his senior year at Florida Atlantic University with a major in Political Science.

Matt Koetting served in the United States Marine Corps in various roles, including assaultman, machine gunner, JTAC, MCIWS, and Reconnaissance Marine. He was deployed with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, to Iraq twice and Afghanistan once.

During Operation Moshtarak in Afghanistan, aimed at taking control of Marjah from the Taliban, Matt was severely wounded by an IED. He was evacuated and underwent over a dozen surgeries, receiving the Purple Heart from President Barack Obama.

Despite his injuries, Matt screened for and completed the Basic Reconnaissance Course, joining the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion. He also attended the US Army Airborne School and the Tactical Air Control Party school.

After his final deployment with the 11th MEU, Matt's injuries led to his medical retirement from the Marine Corps. He co-founded Invictus International, providing armed and unarmed security services and employing veterans.

SSgt Tony Musselman was a United States Marine JTAC and Fire Support Man that worked with 5th ANGLICO, 2D Battalion 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Battalion 6th Marine Regiment and Marine Raider Regiment.

Musselman deployed to Iraq with 5th ANGLICO before heading to 2/10 where he was selected to go to Tactical Air Control Party school to earn his Joint Terminal Attack Controller certification. Immediately following TACP school, Musselman was tapped as a combat replacement for Jason Calo. Calo was another 2/10 JTAC that had been killed in action while participating in Operation Moshtarak with 2/6. Following that deployment, Musselman was recruited to the Marine Raider Regiment to work as a JTAC on their special operations teams.

Musselman would conduct two deployments to Afghanistan with the Marine Raiders. On his first deployment, his team conducted village stability operations and on his second deployment, his team was tasked with conducting direct action raids. We wrap up the interview discussing mental health and some of the issues Musselman dealt with following his multiple combat deployments.

Rob Saale is a retired FBI Special Agent with 23 years of service. He is also the former director of the FBI's Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, a U.S. Government Interagency organization directly responsible to the President of the United States for coordinating recovery efforts for U.S. hostages held abroad. SFC Matt Tardio is a retired Army Special Forces soldier and law enforcement officer. Tardio served as an Engineer Sergeant in the United States Army Special Forces. In addition to completing the Special Forces Qualification Course (Q Course) and follow-on engineer training, Tardio is also sniper qualified and a graduate of Ranger School, among others.

Maj Fred Galvin is an enlisted Marine infantryman turned infantry officer and reconnaissance Marine that did multiple deployments before taking command of the first MARSOC company deployment after the unit formed. Galvin and his Marines were falsely accused of murdering Afghan civilians during their reaction to a complex ambush that included a suicide car bomb and multiple enemy firing positions. After years of fighting the charges in the military justice system, Galvin and his Marines were found to have acted heroically and utilized precision fires to only take out enemy fighters.

SSgt Michael Golembesky was a Marine JTAC who was assigned to the Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC) early on in the unit's infancy and deployed with Marine Special Operations Team (MSOT) 8222 to Bala Murghab, Afghanistan. Golembesky detailed his team's deployment in the 2014 best-selling book, Level Zero Heroes. LZH was the first book to detail a MARSOC element and was followed up with the book Dagger 22.

Prior to becoming a JTAC, Golembesky served his first enlistment as a cannoneer and completed two deployments. In total, he completed five deployments in his eight years in the United States Marine Corps before deciding to return to civilian life. Really great conversation and I look forward to a follow-up interview in the future.

Cpl Miles Vining is a United States Marine Corps infantryman that completed two combat deployments in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He is also an author and small arms enthusiast.

We have a really good discussion covering Vining's role as an infantryman and his thoughts on the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. Vining's unit was one of the first to receive the new IAR and he has an interesting insight into the procurement process.

We also discuss Vining's time with the Walking Dead (1/9) and what that unit's legacy meant to the Marines that served in it. We also get into the 2011 deployment he and 1st Battalion 9th Marines completed in the Helmand Province district of Nawa.

GySgt Leo Lozano is a retired Marine Fire Support Man and also served his initial enlistment as a Fire Direction Control Marine. Lozanao is a veteran of the Gulf War and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As part of 1st Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company, Lozano deployed in support of the Gulf War. His observation post and the observations posts near him were overrun by Iraqi armor from the 5th Armorerd Brigade during the Battle of Khafji, an opening battle to the ground war.

Adrian Aizpuru is a retired border patrol agent with over 30 years of combined service between his work with the United States Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) and his service as a military police officer in the Marine Corps.

Aizpuru worked in the field as an agent, horseback agent, K-9 handler, and more. He was also the supervisor of the El Paso CBP Station's Special Operations Teams. Later, he was selected as the Patrol Agent in Charge of Truth or Consequences Station and Albuquerque Stations, two small stations farther from the border than most.

Maj Thomas Schueman is a Marine Corps infantry officer and deployed as a platoon commander with Kilo Company of 3rd Battalion 5th Marine Regiment during their hard-fought 2010 deployment to the Sangin Valley. 3/5 lost 25 men killed and had almost 200 wounded during the deployment.

Maj. Schueman details the deployment in-depth and also discusses his infantry officer training prior to being assigned to 3/5. Today, Maj. Schueman teaches literature at the United States Naval Academy and looks forward to returning to the Fleet Marine Force.

Paul Smith recently retired as the 1st Marine Division JTAC manager. Prior to holding that position, Smith served as the 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade Fire Support Chief, 1st ANGLICO 1st Brigade Chief, Advisor Team JTAC and fire support specialist, and more.

Smith is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Inherent Resolve and is one of the most experienced JTACs in the Marine Corps at the time of his retirement. Smith now works as a JTAC instructor at Expeditionary Warfare Training Group Pacific.

Rob Saale is a retired FBI Special Agent with 23 years of service. He is also the former director of the FBI's Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell, a U.S. Government Interagency organization directly responsible to the President of the United States for coordinating recovery efforts for U.S. hostages held abroad. Tony Leal was a Marine infantryman (0311) with A Company 1st Battalion 5th Marine Regiment and completed two combat deployments with the battalion.

In 2004 he began his first deployment to Iraq and took part in the first assault on the tumultuous city of Fallujah after Blackwater contractors were ambushed, killed, and hung from the city's bridge. The following year, Leal returned to Iraq and operated out of Ramadi with 1/5. The battalion began experiencing what would be a nationwide increase in the usage of IEDs.

Following his enlistment in the Marine Corps, Leal began pursuing his life-long passion of joining the ranks of the Texas Department of Public Safety's Texas Highway Patrol as a Trooper. He worked his way up the ranks of Texas law enforcement until joining the storied Texas Rangers. As a Texas Ranger, Leal would be responsible for investigating some of Texas's most heinous crimes. Leal retired this year from the Rangers and looks forward to developing a business to help mitigate the veteran suicide epidemic.

Garcia is a veteran of multiple conflicts but we focus on the Gulf War and ANGLICO's role in supporting the invasion and specifically what occurred during the Battle of Khafji that he and his Marines were involved with.

Matt Caples is an Air National Guard JTAC qualified TACP. Prior to serving in the ANG, Caples was a motor transport mechanic in the Marine Corps and did a tour at Parris Island as a Drill Instructor.

Caples details the steps he took to leave the Marines and join the Air Force's TACP program. We go into detail about the TACP training pipeline and compare and contrast the Air Force program with the Marine Corps program.

Dave "Rage" James is a former Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and currently mentors civilians interested in joining the military to become part of special operations. Prior to joining the Marine Corps, James served an enlistment in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer.

James details his path to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion in the 80s and some of the obstacles he overcame to achieve the title of Recon. He also discusses his "gold winging" ceremony (where Marines are presented their gold jump wings after completing the required training syllabus) where his wings were pounded so hard into his chest that his left lung collapsed and damage was done to his heart.

James had some comm issues so we will pick up his story again in the future so make sure to subscribe in order to be notified when his next episode drops. This episode features my buddy from the past, Nick Davison. He currently works in law enforcement but we met as organizational mechanics in the Marine Corps for a 2009 deployment to Al-Taqaddum (TQ) airfield in Iraq.

Davison breaks down his time in the United States Marine Corps Reserves and we compare and contrast that component with being on active duty. We also discuss the military occupation specialty (MOS) school located at Camp Johnson, NC.

As previously mentioned, Davison is in law enforcement and breaks down the vetting and lengthy hiring process for multiple law enforcement agencies in California. He also talks about being a K-9 handler and what it was like working with dogs.
