Comedian Katt Williams, who once sold door to door, told Lewis that sales taught him to collect nos on purpose. Knock on 900 doors, he figured, and 90 yeses will come.

The shift came when Katt decided a no only meant he hadn’t done a good enough job. Maybe it was how he stood, or the look on his face when the door opened.

He carries that into comedy. “The audience is never wrong,” he says, so he rehearses a joke 35 times in the mirror and tests it in 100 cities before it ever reaches a special.
